Research

The Center for Global Initiatives is a catalyst for the innovative research of faculty and students. Through an array of forums, events and resources, we seek to facilitate the flow of ideas.

Currently, we are focusing particular attention on four research themes: 1) Peace and Conflict Resolution, 2) Global Health, 3) Migration, Citizenship and Identity, and 4) the Globalization of the American South.

With books on immigration and regionalism and a major annual conference, we are exploring the changing face of the southern United States and its interaction with the rest of the world.

In collaboration with other units on campus, we are exploring methods to promote research and training opportunities for students traditionally underrepresented in global work.

Our Evaluation Toolkit helps assess the effectiveness of K-12 classroom presentations, our service learning course gives students the skills to improve upon such presentations, and a handbook helps prepare teachers who are working with children from Mexico.

The Faculty Working Groups foster scholarly work, develop grant proposals, and embed research into the curriculum, and our Carolina Papers series provide a forum for advanced graduate students active in the fields of democracy, human rights, international development, and international health.

For its work, the Center for Global Initiatives is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as one of only nine National Resources Centers for Global Studies.
