Sarah Plastino shares her Burch Fellowship experience in Mexico with family, friends, and the UNC community through this blog. Sarah is studying the immigration from the city of Celaya to North Carolina by interviewing families of migrants. She's also spending time volunteering with public health organizations, hanging out with extended families of immigrants, and living on a ranch with over 1000 roosters.

Aaron Charlop Powers traveled to Kenya for a second year volunteer stint for Carolina for Kibera, an international non-governmental organization based in the Kibera slum of Nairobi, Kenya which supports a youth sports program, girls' center, medical clinic, and waste management program.

Marlon Sequeira (biochemistry major) received a UCIS International Internship Award in the amount of $2000 to work as a veterinary assistant with the Animal Rescue Kerala Shelter in Kovalam, India.  Marlon investigated the effectiveness of the current Animal Birth Control and Rabies Program initiatives have been in mitigating the current rabies epidemic.  Marlon then hopes to use this information to develop an education program in the animal shelter to inform local and better healthcare abilities.

Jonathan Pourzal received a UCIS International Internship award in the summer of 2005 to work with an organization known as Friends of Orphans in Uganda. Jonathan helped with entrepreneurial enterprises, education and special projects aimed at stopping childhood soldiering. He continues his work there this summer.
