Certificate in International Development

This Certificate is available to all UNC-CH graduate students who wish to acquire a specialization in issues of international development and social change in communities and nations around the world. The Certificate may be awarded to students at either the masters or doctoral level, and it is noted on the student's transcript. Certificates are issued at the end of each semester.

Goals:

The goals of this Certificate are that:

1) students step outside of the US perspective when viewing the world by emphasizing the international component of the Certificate. Research and coursework must have significant international content. For example, work on immigrants in North Carolina is not sufficient unless it focuses heavily on conditions in country of origin(s);

2) students develop interdisciplinary approaches, especially through taking two course outside of their department or school and;

3) students learn from each other by being given the opportunity for peer learning, especially through the Spring workshops.

Requirements:

  • Four graduate courses on a topic related to international development and social change. At least two of these courses must be external to the student's home department and at least one must come from this short list of courses.
  • Students can consult a list of suggested courses.
  • Participation in a bi-weekly workshop on development, held each spring at CGI. These meetings are discussions of an article or two that will be handed out ahead of time. All discussions will of course revolve around an aspect of international development and will be led by faculty members from around campus. Students will also present their own work during the semester. There is no grade or credit associated with this seminar and no formal enrollment process, aside from letting the Center for Global Initiatives know you will be participating.
  • A thesis, dissertation, or major seminar paper on a topic related to international development and social change.
    Language skills, international experience or technical training is required.

Process:

  1. Graduate students interested in pursuing the Certificate are responsible for constructing their own course plans. Students should:
  2. Design a course plan in consultation with a relevant member of the Faculty Steering Committee. Course plans must demonstrate thematic integrity and coherence. Independent Study and language courses do not count toward the Certificate. A member of the Steering Committee must approve the course plan. Students can consult a list of suggested courses to help design the plan.
  3. Complete the application form.
  4. Submit the approved application form and the major research paper to CGI.
