Katie in Bolivia: Katie Massey is a graduate student in the School of Public Health. Katie recieved an international internship award to work with Save the Children in Bolivia helping to conduct a research studyt on the efficacy of school based health and nutrition programs. The study is focusing on schools within four areas of Bolivia in which the program is present. Micronutrient supplementation and health and hygiene education are the critical elements of the intervention. This project will involve monitoring activities that center around associations among teachers, student leaders, and parents in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

Artemis: Diana Gergel is an undergraduate History major who received a Honors Thesis Research Grant Award. Diana is conducting research in Capetown, South Africa on the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and working for an NGO called the International Centre for Transitional Justice.

Geeter's Travels: Gerold Wharton, an undergraduate major in Economics, African Studies and Chinese received an international internship award to compelete an internship with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Public Health and Community Empowerment in Freetown, Sierra Leone. As a volunteer researcher, Gerold will be working with the UNDP's Peace and Development Unit in collaboration with various local NGO's, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Bank, and other civil society groups working on projects dealing with solid waste management, hygiene education, and economic reconstruction after the country's decade long civil war.

Portrait Bolivia: Andrew Crosson, an undergraduate in Politcal Science and History received a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship co-sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Research and CGI. Andrew will study the influence of ethnic identity and economic status in regional political movements, and consider the future of Bolivia's democracy under and beyond indigenous president Evo Morales' polarizing reforms.

Tar Heels in the Middle East: This shared blog is a forum for the stories, photos, and insights of several UNC students traveling throughout the Middle East. For the most part, they are living and studying independent of one another so expect reports from around the region.
