As one of only nine National Resource Center in Global Studies, the Center for Global Initiatives annually receives $425,000 from the U.S. Department of Education to support and strengthen its operation as a comprehensive language and global studies center.
For the 2006-10 grant cycle, the Center for Global Initiatives is integrating global studies further into the structure of the university by:
- expanding the instruction of Arabic, Lingala and Persian as well of the Languages Across the Curriculum (LAC) program;
- targeting its FLAS awards in Arabic and Kiswahili toward PhD and MA students whose work is oriented toward a future career in government;
- strengthening evaluation efforts;
- establishing new study, research and training opportunities abroad, especially for students who have been traditionally underrepresented in these activities;
- developing global content in over 30 courses;
- advancing interdisciplinary research through faculty working groups, conferences, workshops and funding opportunities;
- launching three new internationally oriented service learning programs;
- advancing internationalization in nine professional schools;
- providing outreach and professional development with regional and national impact through collaboration with HBCUs, community colleges, K-12 educators, community leaders, and global studies centers at peer institutions;
- seeding the institutionalization of the Office of Global Health, the centers for Middle Eastern and African studies, and the joint degree program with National University of Singapore;
- providing targeted support to the Media Resources Center to acquire, catalogue, and maintain its Middle Eastern and Islamic Film collection.
